State of the Science
The State-of-the-Science (SoS) Symposia started in 2004 as a collaboration between the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) WRNMMC, Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), Veterans Affairs (VA), and University of Pittsburgh (UPitt). The goal was and continues to be to bring experts to USU and WRNMMC to enhance the education and gain exposure to recent advances in research to ensure highest quality of medical care, particularly as it relates to rehabilitation. Within the past 15 years, there have been over 75 SoS Symposia hosted through this collaboration, with over 5,000 attendees. Speakers have come from across the US as well as from NATO allies. The SoS Symposia has been hosted at WRNMMC, USUHS, BAMC, National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), the Canadian Embassy, and the Swedish Embassy. There have been four books published by the Borden Institute, over a dozen peer-reviewed journal papers, and more than a half dozen clinical practice guidelines that were developed, or revised, as a result of these SoS meetings. Drs. Paul Pasquina (USUHS) and Rory Cooper (UPitt) formed the concept and have led the SoS for the past 20 years.
CRSR is headquartered at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland. The mission of USU is to support the readiness of America's Warfighter and the health and well-being of the beneficiary community by educating and developing uniformed health professionals, scientists and leaders; by conducting cutting-edge, military-relevant research; by leading the MHS in key functional and intellectual areas; and by providing operational support to units around the world.
